Professional Sod and Lawn Installation
Your lawn installation can feature sod, or artificial grass, and reap the same benefits as real grass. By installing sod, you’re on your way to growing a lush lawn in a matter of days. And living in the Phoenix area, having grass in your yard can instantly bring on a cooler feeling. Some advantages to adding sod to your yard include:
- Enhanced property
- Better oxygen circulation
- Controls soil erosion
- Easier to maintain than real grass.
Core Landscape uses the same type of sod for many installations, known as Midiron. But there are a number of popular varieties we use depending on climate and seeding requirements. Whichever material we feel is best for your lawn’s needs, we will provide care instructions to make sure your yard thrives. Take a look at what lawn installations we can do for your home or business.
Midiron
Midirion is the most common variety of sod we utilize in Arizona. The advantages of midiron are that it is both attractive and low-cost to maintain. The seams mend together after about 10-14 days following installation and proper mowing heights/conditions are needed to properly maintain it. One drawback is that it does not thrive in shade – which may be a good or bad thing considering the arid desert climate. Consider this type of sod for your lawn installation:
- Texture: Medium-course leaf
- Color: Blue-green
- Damage recovery: Excellent
- Shade tolerance: Poor
- Drought tolerance: Good
- Mowing care: Reel mower
- Mowing height: ¾” to 1 ½”
Tifway 419
Tif-variety sod types are similar to golf course grass. Some are thicker or thinner and some are taller or shorter. Tifway 419 sod is extremely durable and is used in professional sports fields, golf fairways and even home lawns more than any other bermudagrass variety. It does not adjust well to shade and will do much better in full-sun exposure.
- Texture: Fine
- Color: Dark-green
- Damage recovery: Very good
- Shade tolerance: Poor
- Drought tolerance: Very good
- Mowing care: Reel or sharp rotary mower
- Mowing height: ½” to 1 ½”
Tifgreen
Tifgreen is another overseeded sod choice best for golf greens, fairways and home lawns. Its bright green appearance comes extremely manicured and has a very fine texture. This type of sod is more resistant to disease, pests and weeds and also requires less mowing than other varieties. Keep in mind that it is best with full sun exposure and does not do so well in shade. Note these other features:
- Texture: Very fine
- Color: Bright green
- Damage recovery: Fair
- Shade tolerance: Poor
- Drought tolerance: Fair
- Mowing care: Reel or sharp rotary mower
- Mowing height: ¼” to ¾”
Tifgrand Bermuda
This tif-variety of artificial grass is developed to handle up to 60% of shade and about 4-5 hours of direct sunlight – more tolerable than what Tifway 419 and Tifgrand can withstand. This does mean that this lawn installation will require higher maintenance in full sun yards. You’ll be able to find this sod variety on golf tee boxes as well as Arizona home lawns.
- Texture: Fine
- Color: Dark green
- Damage recovery: Fair
- Shade tolerance: Excellent
- Drought tolerance: Fair
- Mowing care: Reel or sharp rotary mower
- Mowing height: ½” to 1 ½”
Palmetto St. Augustine
One of the big benefits to St. Augustine sod is that it is both shade and full-sun tolerant – perfect for an Arizona desert climate. It can tolerate the summer heat and will also adapt perfectly to less exposed areas of your yard. This sod installation is good for situations where flood irrigation exists or where there is a lot of shade. Take a look at some of the features of St. Augustine:
- Texture: Coarse with a soft leaf
- Color: Bright green
- Sun exposure: Excellent
- Damage recovery: Fair
- Shade tolerance: Excellent
- Drought tolerance: Fair
- Mowing care: Reel or sharp rotary mower
- Mowing height: 1 ½” to 3”
One factor to keep in consideration is that St. Augustine can never be overseeded and is only available in hotter climates – whereas other sod varieties can be installed year-round.
Overseeding
When you decide to overseed your lawn, you are planting grass seed directly onto the existing turf. This allows lawns to thrive and give a fresher and greener look. Eventually, the need for fertilizer reduces and your investment pays off. All varieties of sod, with the exception of St. Augustine, is that they can be installed year-round where they are already overseeded. The process can be done within a winter climate, whereas St. Augustine is sodded in hotter temperatures.
By overseeding, this allows Arizona lawns to remain green in the winter. Not going through with this process will allow the sod to go dormant in the colder months, and will not thrive again until the summer (when it’s above ground). All types of sod must be installed for six months before overseeding. Based on our timeline, overseeding lawns takes place between September and October in Arizona in order for it to thrive later on.
